Thoughts
I’m tackling a paper about Building 21st Century Schools this weekend so I might post some thoughts looking for feedback.
Question 1:“If a student brought his laptop to school would he be applauded…or suspended?”
Scenerio 1:
“You are not allowed to use your phone, iPod, laptop, watch youTube or send email. Please use only this pencil and paper. No you may not use the computer. We are scheduled to use the computer next Thursday for 45 minutes. You will have to pair up as we only have 24 computers and there are 32 of you.”
Sound familiar?

Applauded! I ALWAYS encourage students bring in laptops. Very few do and then not all the time. I just don’t get that one. In English, I see increases in fluency and literacies when the obstacle of handwriting is removed. In Study Skills, I teach them how to use the web 2.0 tools to study effectively. In Maths, there are numerous online resources. I think a big part of our problem is lack of student log-ons to the server. Since I am not the administrator….

Okay, they either fired me or never hired me at this school! Have you seen my blogs? Youtube, teachertube, & now Miguel, Godtube, all over my blogs and accessed in school. We listen to iPod music while writing in English, we will listen to a podcast on our iPods in order to complete an assignment on our last day of classes with our principal’s permission, we access email for educational purposes (today in 7th grade we HAD to when we set up our RSS aggregators), laptops are encouraged. We can get RSS reminders to do hw on our cell phones, though often we are texting our boyfriends (it’s more a girl thing than a boy thing this year). Our school does not allow any of these things. Luckily for my employment, the principal sees education my way. Or they would fire me…..

Thanks for your thoughtful response. I do think you may teach at a forward thnking school. I think a strong majority of schools would suspend a kid for insisting to use his laptop. No phones, no iPods, no laptops.
And in most classes the time spent with technology is rare, and scheduled. Its an “event” when we do. And often that “event” is just to search for websites about a subject, print them out, and answer a few questions. Not very engaging for students.

Related to this. How will the power structure change in a school when their towns go wireless and students don’t need the school network to access the internet?
Can you see more schools banning internet devices (phones, laptops, etc…) because now they cant control the filter?
